HIV peer support is beyond national boundaries

Peduli Hati Bangsa data enumerator was contacted by RS Cipto Mangunkusumo (RSCM), Jakarta to support a person from Sierra Leone who was hospitalized at the hospital with tuberculosis meningitis and stroke. The person was facing significant barriers to accessing antiretroviral therapy due to immigration requirements, absence of family members in Indonesia, and the lack of a Sierra Leone Embassy in the country.

Peduli Hati Bangsa provided immediate emergency support by donating three bottles of Tenofovir–Lamivudine–Dolutegravir (TLD) to ensure immediate HIV treatment. Coordinated with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), facilitating a meeting involving PHB, IOM, and RSCM wher IOM indicated its commitment to fund medical care, shelter, and repatriation should the case be confirmed as human trafficking.

During hospitalization drug–drug interactions between the person’s tuberculosis meningitis regimen and standard TLD therapy necessitated an adjustment to the antiretroviral regimen. PHB promptly procured and delivered an additional supply of Dolutegravir 50 mg directly to the attending physician at RSCM to ensure appropriate dosing and continuity of care. The patient was later discharged. Despite the succesful coordinated medical and humanitarian interventions, the patient unfortunately passed away at home shortly after discharge.
